English As A Second Language: Introduction
Beacon’s English As A Second Language (ESL) programme is a graded course which aims to build up our students?level of competency and confidence in the English language in a gradual and structured way so that they can live and study effectively in an English speaking environment. It is designed primarily to prepare students for studying in Singapore where command of the English language is necessary. After successfully completing the upper-intermediate level of our ESL program our students will be able to progress on to courses at diploma and degree level.
Our English As A Second Language programme at Beacon is mapped on to the five levels of the European Common Framework for English language teaching. Altogether there are 5 levels. A student who has little or no knowledge of English will have to go through these 5 levels to achieve a level of competency in English as required by many universities or colleges in the UK, USA or Australia or locally in Singapore for degree studies.

Course Structure for English As A Second Language

Placement Test
Students are required to take an in-house English placement test. After the placement test, students will be placed into one of the five appropriate levels based on their English needs.
Assessment
The English As A Second Language course will be characterized by both lectures and task-based activities. A student-centred approach will be employed to produce positive results. Emphasis will be placed on short presentations, focused exercises, role-play, student-interaction, pair-work, student tasks, continuous assessment, projects and final exams.

Certification
Candidates who successfully complete each level of the English Course will be awarded the Beacon School of Technology English Certificate for the level achieved. For the IELTS course, students are encouraged to take the IELTS Test in order to get their IELTS score.
Course Schedule
Each level takes approximately 180 hours for all levels except the IELTS (Part-time) course which is 144 hours.
Full-time
- Recommended Duration : 3 months (12 weeks x 15 hours per week)
Part-time
- Recommended Duration : 26 months (24 weeks x 6 hours per week)
