Introduction

The Diploma in Business and Information Technology is a broad-based and stimulating programme. The purpose of the course is to provide students with the fundemental knowledge and skills necessary for entry to the BTEC Higher Nationals Diploma Courses conducted at Beacon.

The course aims to provide students with a foundational understanding of business and IT while also helping them to build core skills in teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and technological application skills.

Course Structure

The Diploma course comprises of five compulsory units and one optional unit determined by the College of study.

The units are as follows:
Compulsory Units:

This unit aims to teach students how to effectively communicate in both written and oral form in a professional setting by using technology. It also  emphasizes how modern technical platforms are used for business communication.

The aim of this course is to provide students with an overview of general business and a foundational knowledge of business concepts and organizations.

Students will learn the fundamentals of marketing in this subject, including how to use the four components of the marketing mix—product, pricing, place, and promotion—to create a marketing strategy. Students will use their newly gained knowledge and abilities to locate a business opportunity and create a business plan for starting and operating a small enterprise.

The aim of this course is to the development of information technology-related digital skills, such as communication, problem-solving, and technology  innovation. The unit exposes students to the current and emerging IT technologies and applications while providing opportunities for them to learn the  fundamentals of IT through exploration and self-discovery.

This unit introduces students to the study and thinking skills that students need in order to study efficiently and effectively in post-secondary education. It also aims to give the students the opportunity to build on the student’s experience of communication, allowing them to understand the basis for inter-personal communication, and requiring them to develop and apply appropriate communication strategies.

Optional Units (determined by the College):

The aim of this course is to introduce students to electronic commerce and online businesses so that students can develop skills to design online business strategies in an e-commerce web presence. Students will further appreciate the value of e-commerce and online businesses to enhance productivity and revenue.

The aim of the unit is to gradually and methodically increase students’ proficiency and confidence in the English language so they can study and work  productively in an English-speaking environment. It also enables students to acquire English language proficiency in preparation for the IELTS examination, an entry requirement for some universities/institutes of higher learning.

This unit directs to improve all four language skills, reading, speaking, writing and listening, as required for the IELTS examination. The course also attempts to  live students a thorough understanding of the various IELTS exam question types, how to answer them, and how to follow instructions.

Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to:

  1. Collect, arrange, and explain information effectively in a variety of context.
  2. Use technology effectively in acquiring knowledge, and in gathering, organizing and presenting information.
  3. Recognize the fundamental concepts of business and marketing and apply the knowledge and skills acquired to develop a business plan.
  4. Identify key basic IT concepts and apply problem-solving techniques using technology.
Admission Criteria

Academic Requirement

  • GCE ‘O’ level – 3 Grade C6
  • Grade 10
  • SPM – 3 passes
  • ITE-Nitec
  • Chinese Senior High School Year 1

English Entry Requirement

Students with equivalent foreign qualifications may be admitted provided they are proficient in the English Language, and possess

  1. IELTS 5.0 or equivalent qualifications OR
  2. a Pass in English Placement Test determined by the College

Those who fail the English Placement Test will be required to successfully complete the EAP/ESL (Lower Intermediate) course conducted by college

Course Information

Full-time

  • 3 units per semester
  • Recommended Duration : 6 months

Part-time

  • Recommended Duration : 1 year

Certification:

Candidates who successfully complete all 6 units of this programme will be awarded the Diploma in Business and Information Technology by Beacon International College. This certification allows direct entry into the internationally recognized BTEC HND Diploma awarded by Pearson Education (UK).

Certificate of Merit Award (for Beacon and Pearson courses only)

A student who has successfully completed a diploma course may be awarded a Certificate of Merit, provided that the following criteria are fulfilled:

  1. A Distinction grade in at least one (1) subject, AND
  2. A Merit grade or better for at least half of the total number of units in a course

Top student award (for Beacon and Pearson courses only)

A student awarded the Certificate of Merit and has obtained the highest score based on the grade of the units in courses marks may receive the Top Student Award.

Score computation is based on 1) Distinction = 7 points, 2) Merit = 3 points, 3) Pass = 0 points.

All students shall achieve at least 75% of attendance for award.

Teacher-Student Ratio

  • Based on student population and the number of active full-time and part-time teachers, the teacher-student ratio in Beacon is not more than 1:15.
